The first full day devoted to botanical exploration takes participants to the Monte Genzana Alto Gizio Nature Reserve, one of Abruzzo’s most important protected areas and one of the central Apennines’ most significant natural sites.

The morning excursion will follow sections of the celebrated Orchid Trail, a route created to showcase the reserve’s exceptionally rich flora. Accompanied by expert botanical guides, participants will have the opportunity to learn more about the ecology, evolution and pollination strategies of Mediterranean orchids, while observing the many plant communities that characterise these limestone environments.

Depending on seasonal conditions and flowering times, participants may observe representatives of the genera Ophrys, Anacamptis, Orchis, Neotinea and Serapias. Potential species include Anacamptis morio, Anacamptis papilionacea, Ophrys sphegodes, Ophrys incubacea and Neotinea tridentata, together with many other herbaceous plants that make these meadows particularly spectacular in spring.

In the afternoon, the journey will continue to Palena, known as the “Village of Orchids”. A pleasant walk through the historic centre and surrounding natural areas will reveal the deep connection between the local community and its botanical heritage. For years, Palena has promoted awareness and conservation of wild orchids through educational initiatives, nature trails and activities dedicated to enhancing local flora, making it one of the best-known places for orchid enthusiasts in Italy.

The return to the hotel will pass through the spectacular landscapes of Maiella National Park, offering magnificent views of the mountains that will accompany the following days’ excursions. Dinner and overnight stay.

Today’s programme is one of the most fascinating moments of the entire itinerary, bringing together botany, geology, history and spirituality within one of the most evocative mountain landscapes in central Italy.

The morning will be devoted to a visit to the Hermitage of Sant’Onofrio al Morrone, spectacularly nestled among the limestone cliffs overlooking the Peligna Valley. The Maiella and Morrone massifs are among the most interesting floristic areas of the central Apennines. Their remarkable variety of elevations, exposures, geological substrates and microclimates favours an exceptionally rich and diverse flora, making the area a reference point for botanists and naturalists.

Depending on seasonal conditions and flowering times, participants may observe species such as Ophrys sphegodes, Ophrys holosericea, Anacamptis morio, Anacamptis pyramidalis, Neotinea tridentata and Orchis mascula.

In the afternoon, the group will reach the characteristic village of Roccacaramanico, a small gem of mountain architecture set in a captivating natural landscape. Its ancient stone houses and spectacular views of the surrounding mountains will provide a perfect ending to a day in which nature, history and culture blend harmoniously.

After the first part of the journey among the mountain landscapes of the Maiella and Morrone, the itinerary continues eastwards through the gentle hills of inland Abruzzo. The gradual change in scenery highlights how, within just a few kilometres, Abruzzo offers an extraordinary variety of natural environments, ranging from high mountains to hilly and wetland ecosystems.

The destination for the day is the Lago di Penne Regional Nature Reserve, a protected area managed by WWF Italy and recognised as one of the region’s most important examples of environmental restoration and nature conservation.

During nature walks, participants will be able to observe a rich variety of wild flora, as well as numerous species of water birds and other characteristic elements of lake ecosystems.

The combination of woodland, meadows and wetlands makes this one of Abruzzo’s most interesting environments from an ecological perspective.

After a packed lunch immersed in nature, the journey will continue to the town of Penne, crossing a landscape dotted with vineyards, olive groves and small rural villages that tell the story of the region’s long agricultural tradition.

Arrival at the hotel in the late afternoon will offer a moment to relax before dinner and reflect on the extraordinary variety of natural environments discovered during the first part of the journey.

The day is devoted to discovering one of Abruzzo’s most representative cultural landscapes, where nature, history and agriculture have coexisted harmoniously for centuries.

Lauretum Landscape Park is home to one of the most evocative complexes of historic olive groves in central Italy. Some of the monumental trees in the area are several centuries old and bear witness to the deep bond between the land and olive cultivation, which remains one of the defining features of the Abruzzo landscape.

In late spring, meadows and grassy margins may offer interesting botanical observations and, when conditions are favourable, it is not uncommon to encounter wild orchid species typical of open Mediterranean habitats. The guides will explain the delicate balance between agricultural activity and habitat conservation, highlighting the role these landscapes play in protecting wild flora.

In the afternoon, the group will visit the medieval village of Loreto Aprutino, one of the most elegant historic centres in the inland Pescara area. Its narrow cobbled streets, historic buildings and panoramic terraces offer splendid views stretching from the cultivated hills to the Adriatic Sea, with the Gran Sasso rising in the background.

Today’s excursion takes participants into the heart of Gran Sasso and Monti della Laga National Park, one of the Apennines’ most iconic and spectacular mountain landscapes. The floristic richness of these environments results from the interaction of geology, climate and traditional pastoral activity, elements that have contributed to preserving extraordinary biodiversity.

Depending on seasonal conditions and flowering times, participants may observe species such as Anacamptis papilionacea, Anacamptis pyramidalis, Ophrys bertolonii, Ophrys holosericea, Gymnadenia conopsea and Dactylorhiza sambucina.

The itinerary will continue to the extraordinary Rocca Calascio, considered one of Europe’s most evocative medieval castles. Perched at an altitude of more than 1,400 metres, the fortress offerers breathtaking views of the Gran Sasso mountains and the vast valleys below.

Leaving the hilly landscapes behind, the journey continues towards the Aterno Valley, an area where geology has shaped landscapes of extraordinary beauty and natural interest.

The morning will be devoted to a visit to the Stiffe Caves, one of the most spectacular karst cave systems in the Italian Apennines. Accompanied by specialist guides, participants will follow an evocative underground route through natural galleries, streams, waterfalls, small lakes and majestic limestone formations, discovering how water has shaped this remarkable environment over thousands of years.

After the visit, the itinerary continues through the evocative landscapes of the Aterno Valley, where small villages, meadows, traditional farmland and mountain ranges alternate to create a landscape mosaic of great charm. Numerous panoramic stops will offer further opportunities to observe wild flora and photograph some of the most characteristic scenery of inland Abruzzo.

Although the main focus of the day is on geological and landscape features, favourable seasonal conditions may allow participants to observe some late-flowering orchids and numerous other species typical of Apennine flora.

The afternoon is intentionally more relaxed, giving participants time to enjoy the final landscapes, take photographs and look back on the many botanical experiences of the week.

The day will conclude with a farewell dinner, an opportunity to share photographs, impressions and memories of a journey that will have offered an intimate encounter with some of the most fascinating natural environments of central Italy, while also creating new friendships among orchid enthusiasts from different countries.

After breakfast, the group will leave Abruzzo for Rome, once again crossing the spectacular landscapes of the central Apennines.

Although the tour has come to an end, participants will take home memories of a week spent among spectacular mountains, unspoilt landscapes, historic villages and an extraordinary variety of natural environments.
